Big surprise eh? Yup, we were all pirates this year.

Every year the dental school let the kids come trick or treat amoungst the

staff.

Our little Alli turned 2 on the 29th. She got a scooter which she

sometimes calls her "screwdriver", a tennis racket, and several dolls

that she loves. We had aunt Karen with us to celebrate. We also had a minnie

mouse cake.

During Mark's fall break we went to Vala's Pumpkin

Patch again. We went through the haunted houses,

watched the pig races, jumped on the huge trampolines,

and watched a pumpkin get launched out of a cannon. Ah yes,

good times.

Yep, Chad had his fourth birthday. Can you guess what the theme was?? Chad's still VERY much into everything Pirate so we had a party with all of his buddies where they played "Musical Islands", "Canon ball Toss", bashed the lights out of a pirate ship pinata, and of coarse had some pirate birthday cake. Chad got lots of fun things including a BYU football uniform and the awesome Jack Sparrow costume that he's wearing in most of the pictures and has been wearing since he opened it.(Thanks Maka!) What a fun birthday for this little bucaneer! (And there's about 3 more new posts so keep scrolling down)

When we came back from Utah, Mark's parents and sisters, Jen and Karen came with us to move Karen out to Iowa City for school. They stayed with us in Omaha for a few days then Mark and Chad went with them to help Karen. They all stopped in Des Moines to check out the Iowa State Fair where they saw Mitt Romney give a speech, rode some awesome carnival rides and had PB&J on a stick!

Utah Trip

After Mark took his dental boards, (which he passed, by the way) we went to Utah for a little vacation. We played at the lake, went swimming, had fun with aunts and uncles, Mark enjoyed a little golf, and we just soaked up the beautiful Utah weather! Mary's entire family came to Utah so we had a reunion with them which was a lot of fun. Here's a few pics from our trip.

So, it's been a little while.......At the beginning of May Mark had his "White Coat Ceremony" which means he is now working on patients in the clinic and is half way done with dental school! His parents came out forthe occasion and we had a fun time showing them the sights of Omaha and the kids loved having Grandpa and Grandma around. Mark and Mary celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary on the 13th (Five awesome years!) Chad's been playing YMCA soccer again. And Alli is.....well, just being as cute as ever and talking up a storm.

A Pirate's Life For Chad!

Ever since we went to Disneyland Chad has worn his

"pirate things" EVERY day without fail! He's rarely seen

without it. Mary has to repeatedly tie his belt around his

waist so he can hold his sword and telescope. Chad is all about pirates

lately. He watches Peter Pan every single day and is often

quoting the movie. His favorite TV show is Jake and the Neverland

Pirates to which he knows all the songs. He even refers to himself in

the third person as a pirate. For example: Mary: "Chad do you want an apple?"

Chad: "Yes, pirates love apples!" ???? "Okay Chad. Uh, I mean Captain Chad."

Vacation

Mary and the kids flew down to Arizona to spend time

with her parents in Willcox. Holly happened to be

running in a race the same week in Tempe, so most of

the family was able to get together. The kids had fun at

Maka and Papa's house - Chad shooting baskets and riding

bikes. Alli - pushing grocery carts. Mary - basking in the warm

sun while watching the kids.

Mary and the kids, as well as her folks and Will

and Janna and their kids, drove to California and Mark flew

in from Omaha to join them. We spent a few days in Camarillo

with Mary's Grandparents and then on to Disneyland!

Chad loves, loves, LOVES everything pirate these days. When

he got these ears and accessories to say he was excited would be

an understatement. He wore these the whole time at Disneyland

and continues to wear them everyday since.

We had a great time over

Christmas break. We spent

it in Manti but Mary's

parents came up so we

visited with her family as

well. We played in the snow (there was a lot of it) went sledding, Mark went

snowboarding, we celebrated Mary's

28th birthday, took a train ride on The North Pole Express, and had fun opening presents on Christmas. A few days after we got home Alli got tubes in her ears. Sad for a day, but since then, she's been much happier.

Vala's Pumpkin Patch

We learned that the thing to do in Omaha this time of year is to go to Vala's Pumpkin Patch. There was quite a lot of things to do including watching pigs race, viewing a pumpkin launched from a canon (seriously LAUNCHED incredibly far), jumping on trampoline-like contraptions, and pedaling around a track on a bike/car. The place was also filled with anamatronic ghosts and ghouls and several kid friendly haunted houses. It was a beautiful fall day in Omaha, and we had a great time.

Chad is a officially a shin-guard wearing member of YMCA youth soccer. Our friends invited us to join their 3-4 year old soccer team, and we somewhat hesitantly decided to sign him up. Mark and Chad practiced regularly leading up to the first game, mostly because Mark was worried Chad wouldn't have a clue what he was doing when he got out there. Well, he was partly right (Chad scores at least one goal for the other team every game,) but he's starting to get the hang of it and having lots of fun. Every Saturday morning, you can find us on the sidelines cheering on our Mighty Kickers.

Chad turned 3 years old on the 27th and boy was he excited!! Mary made a big Toy Story cake (which Chad didn't even bite. But Alli loved it.) He got lots of presents including a Mickey Mouse train set from Maka & Papa and a super cute hoodie towel from Grandpa and Grandma Johnson. He also got a new tee to play baseball with Mark. Thanks to all the Johnson siblings for the fun gifts as well. He had a great birthday and loved every minute of it!

We were so excited to have Mary's parents come to visit us for a week. We showed them around the sights of Omaha and even saw some new ones ourselves.

Winter Quarters Temple

We took a little trip down to Kansas City where we went to the downtown Crown Center, Kaliedescope, and Union Station. We also visited a few church sights including the Independence Visitor's Center, Liberty Jail, Far West, and Adam-Ondi-Ahman.

Of course, if there is anything sports-related nearby, Mark will find it. We were actually going to go to the Ultimate College Basketball Experience in Kansas City, but it was closed. But luckily, we found that the Chiefs were practicing nearby.

And we also went to the Omaha zoo.

Homeward Bound

We made it to Omaha! We've actually been here for over a month now but we've kept really busy with fixing up our new place, visiting the sights of the city, and of course, Mark starting his second year of dental school. We really like Nebraska so far. We've had a taste of the beautiful spring weather, the beginning of the sweltering humidity, and even our first tornado warning. We live in a great place called Village Green and have lots of wonderful neighbors and friends.

Winter Quarters Temple

We live right up the street from the Lauritzen Botanical Gardens where, lucky for us, we get in free! There's a really neat railroad garden with about 6 or 7 seven miniature trains going around which Chad LOVES! There's also two huge trains at the top of the hill near the border of Iowa.

Henry Doorly Zoo

One of the perks of where we live is that we are right by the Omaha Zoo. We bought a season pass and have already gone several times. If you ever come to Omaha, it's one of the places to visit.

The newest exhibit at the zoo is the Madagascar Expedition. Seeing as Madagascar is Chad's current favorite movie (he frequently breaks out in "I like to move it, move it"), it's definitely one of his favorite places to go. Here we are at Lemur Island where Mary was taking a picture of Chad and Mark with the lemur when it suddenly pounced onto the railing right next to her and Alli (scaring the daylights out of Mary).

The Missouri River

The Riverfront is probably our favorite place to go. It's pretty cool walking along the river and even over it on the pedestrian suspension bridge.

We took a "cruise" one night on the ferry boat. The sunset

reflecting on the water around dusk is pretty impressive.

the river called "The Heartland of America Park."

Alli Hits the Half-Year Mark!

Weighing in at 18 lbs 10 oz and 27 inches long, Alli's a sweet, big bundle of love! She is such a happy, easy-going baby. She brings so much joy to us every day. Here's some of her accomplishments and favorite things:

Chad and Anika were great friends when we lived in Provo and little Avery was just a baby last time we saw her. Mary took on the project of re-doing our coffee table. We forgot to take a before picture so this first one is part way through. It used to be dark green on the legs and a wood finish on the top. It was quite the process to get this thing sanded down.

Easter Sunday

We stayed home and did Easter alone for the first time and it seems we have mixed reviews. Just kidding, we had and great time and Chad got to hunt for easter eggs time and time again. Mark was a little let down that Chad lost some of the "giddy-up" for finding eggs he had last year, but he's coping well (Mark, that is.) Both the kids got easter baskets which included a stuffed frog (new bedtime buddy) and a frisbee for Chad and a bunch of baby toys for Alli. Chad's basket was also chock full of candy, the whereabouts he still can't figure out. Mary was looking at some candy and asked Mark, "Are these jelly beans?" Before Mark could respond, Chad piped in, "No, they're Easter...jelly beans." What was Mary thinking?

Two weeks ago, Grandma Johnson taught Chad to paint eggs using a Q-tip as a brush. So naturally, Chad sat down, grabbed a crayon, and picked up where he had left off. It took us awhile to figure out what in the world he was doing.

The Tuesday night forecast showed a slight chance at rain and a 100% chance of poor air quality. Please, that's not enough for us to keep our poor little kids in house, especially when there's a free baseball game downtown. Mark's former school (UVU) was in town to play the Utes and Chad was really dying to go, so we decided to check it out for a minute. Besides, the last time we got Chad excited about a baseball game, it snowed and we stayed home...he was bummed (poor justification I know.) Thankfully, any chance of rain and all current pollutants cleared up quickly and it made for a great night. The weather even got so mild that we didn't mind bringing Alli out from her bundle. Chad watched attentively for about 10 minutes and spent the rest of the time watching who-know's-what. We'd tell him the name of the batter coming up (like "Jace" for example), and then for the next six batters (on both teams) he'd ask, "Is that Jace?" It was pretty cool, especially when Jace hit a homerun and the Wolverines won the game.

We were lucky to have Mary's Mom, aka, "Maka" come stay with us for a few days. While Mark was at school, Mary, Maka, Chad, and Alli went to Heritage Park and rode the train around the pioneer village.

CHAD

Chad cracks us up on a daily basis with the things that come out of his mouth, even when he stutters and it takes five second to say the one word he's looking for. Here are a few things he's said that we had to write down. In the past few months, Chad says that he loves things.... EVERYTHING. We say, "Do you want to play tee-ball?" And he'd respond, "Yeah! I love tee-ball! I love it!" One day Mary had to take Chad to the doctor so she told him to get in the car. He asked if we were going to the store and Mary didn't want to tell him yet where they were going so she said, "No, we're going.......somewhere else." To which Chad responded enthusiastically, "Yeah! I love else!" On another occasion Mark said to Chad, "What time is it?" (no, he doesn't tell time yet, but Mark was having a teaching moment,) and said, "Look, it's one thirty." And you can guess what Chad said next,....."Yeah, I love thirties!"

He just loves life and the simplest things! Recently, he's also been referring to himself as "Chaddy". We say, "Are you a monster?" And he says, "I'm not a monster I'm Chaddy." We only call him that occasionally so we figure he wants to be like everyone else in the family. Daddy, Mommy, Alli, and......Chaddy.

The day before her birthday, Mary found this paper laying on the bed. She enjoys surprises but also likes to "be prepared" and "plan ahead" for things, so Mark left this to give her an idea and time frame of what would be happening on her big day.

Breakfast turned out to be Ruth's Diner. A quaint little place up Emigration Canyon where they serve the biggest, most fluffy and delicious biscuits you've ever had!

After breakfast, Mary received some cute cards from Chad and Alli.

Mark sent Mary out for a pedicure. Talk about relaxation!

And where else to have a swashbuckling good time, but Pirate Island Pizza! What a fun Birthday! And what a very sweet husband to plan a great and memorable day for his wife! Thanks Mark!

The Lights on Temple Square

If there is one thing Mary gets excited about every winter it's the lights on temple square. We froze our rear-ends off, but it was fun to walk through looking at the lights below the illuminated temple. Chad got to see the nativity scene on a life-size scale and Mary even ran into Sister's Knabe and Smith from her mission, which was a pleasant surprise.

Chad couldn't see why this was a bad idea.

Chad turned "monster" on Mary the first time she attempted to get pictures taken at Kiddie Kandids, so naturally she came home empty handed. Since then, in random moments of regret Chad would say, "wanna take a picture" as if he was remorseful and wanted a chance to redeem himself. Thankfully the second attempt was a success, though Alli struggled mightily with the concept of "look at the camera" (I guess we'll cut her some slack, at least until she's 2 months old :)

Chad Does Cougar Town

Chad finally got a chance to drop the line that he's been practicing for weeks, "Go Cougarrrs!" Mark and Chad met up with some of Mark's siblings to catch the BYU v. Air Force game down in Provo. The weather was a little chilly, but Chad was bundled up from head to toe including his cougar paw tattoo. The action was superb as the Cougars took care of business, but the highlight was when Chad, from 120 rows away, spotted the Air Force mascot and shouted, "Duck!" How can you blame him, that big blue bird didn't look any more like a Falcon than it did any other species of flying vertebrates (Mark can't wait to tell his brother Nate, USAF pilot, that Chad was dissing the Air Force mascot.) "Rah-rah-rah-rah-rah, Go Cougars!"

Chad Rides Trains

Mark offered to "take Chad off of Mary's hands" on Friday afternoon by taking him up to Rice-Eccles stadium for a high school football playoff game (yeah right, we all know his real motive.) Anyway, to satisfy Chad's love of "choo-choo trains," Mark decided to take him up to the game on TRAX. Chad had a blast riding public transport as he continually shouted "train go fast!"

Alli Laurel Johnson was born on Oct. 29th at 7:43 pm,
weighing in at 7lbs 13 oz and was 20.5 inches long. She has
lots of light brown hair and is as cute as can be.

For Chad's 2nd birthday we had to keep with his favorite theme. Even now, days later, he brings up his "Mickey Cake" and his party. Rob Johnson hosted the party and the guests were Grandpa and Grandma Johnson, Karen, Chris, Jen, Haylee, Cousin Blake, Nate and Callie Tenney, and Great Grandpa and Grandma Bushman.

Waterfalls, hikes, and hammocks were all in full effect at the Scholes Family Reunion this past week. Tradition and memories brought us Johnson kids excitedly back to Calf Creek campground in SE Utah. Chad always loves to play with his aunts, uncles, and grandparents and this was no exception (In fact, we can't even mention who we're going to see anymore until we close enough to not mind the whining for the rest of the way.) Chad even made friends with a couple of 2nd cousins he didn't really know before. Throughout all the creek swimming, shirt designing, hammock swinging, and campfire singing we all had a great time. The highlight may have been the hike down into the upper falls. The slick rock was pretty grueling, but the cliff jumps into the waterfall pools were well worth the effort. Mary (6 months pregnant) put everyone else to shame being the first one back up the slick rock on the hike out. That's my girl.

Let Freedom Ring

This Fourth of July weekend was full of all your tradition components: hot-air ballons, flu-like symptoms, and more marching bands than you can shake a tuba at. Chad has been on a balloon kick, so we knew he'd love freedom festival hot-air balloon show. We left the house early and planned on driving over to the soccer field, but were surprised to find a giant Tony the Tiger balloon landing just across the street from our house. Chad was a little bewildered, but quickly started bubbling over with excitement. From there we squeezed into the last remaining spot along the parade route and watched what seemed like a marching band festival. The music was good, but didn't take long before we were all bored, including Chad. Unfortunately, Mark was pretty sick the whole weekend, so he really had to suck it up to get on with the show. We ended the night by taking Chad up to Rock Canyon Park to watch the fireworks. Chad loved 'em and wouldn't stop saying "Pireworrrks."

Trip to Flagstaff, AZ

We had an ultra sound today and found out that we're having a girl! We're very excited, Mary especially to be able to get girly things. Chad doesn't realize he'll be having a little sister but he'll be a great older brother.

UVU Graduation

After two years at Snow College and three more at Utah Valley University, Mark finally finished phase one of his educational journey. Most of his family was able to attend, as well as Mary's grandpa. Mark graduated with honors and looked sharp in his Hufflepuff house robes. Chad sat out the morning commencement which was headlined by President Thomas S. Monson. Convocation in the afternoon wasn't too exciting, but sure revved up our appetites for Macarroni Grill. Mark says he's proud to be a Wolverine.

Chad Gets Ear Tubes

After months and months of ear infections, Chad finally got tubes put in today. Here's a few pics while we waited for him to go in.

Here we are right after the surgery. Chad was not a happy camper. The anesthesia made him a little irritable. But we're home now and he's back doing the Mickey Mouse hot dog dance.

The Easter festivities began last Tuesday when Chad had his first easter egg hunt with all his buddies in our Mother's Group. We also colored eggs at home and let Chad hunt around the apartment for them. He gets so excited yelling, "Eeegh!" (not really sounding out the 'g' in egg.) We also went to Grandma and Grandpa Johnson's house in Manti where we colored more eggs, Chad got to see and touch some goats, he played baseball and looked for more eggs on easter morning. He became quite the pro egg hunter. On Sunday after church we took a picture of Chad with Anika and Avery Mortensen because they all looked so cute in their easter orange church clothes.

Mark had a few days off for Spring Break so we decided to head on down to sunny Arizona. Of course we can't go to Arizona in the Spring without going to a baseball game. We took a break in Tucson to watch a spring training game of the Diamondbacks vs Brewers. Mark and Mary didn't see much of each other during the game because one of us was always with Chad, trying to keep him entertained.

Mary's cousin Dan and his wife Kendra came to visit while we were in Willcox. Here are the kids - Bryce, Chad, Jackson, and Kyla.

Mary's parents have missionaries living with them and Elder Richards had some fun bonding time with Chad. Chad wanted to be pushed around in a shopping cart, and not too much later he fell asleep.

The next day, the same elder was taking Chad for a ride on the lawn mower and yep, the little guy fell asleep once again.

Gettin' Down on the Turkey Farm

Chad recently had his first encounter with the Cook family turkeys. We were down for the weekend so we zipped out to the farm with Thomas, Holly, and those cute Cook kids. Chad seemed to be in awe at the overwhelming number of furry little creatures. He wasn't too excited to follow Kady's lead and hold them, but he did take some satisfaction in shuffling his feet as if trying to startle them (at least that's what it looked like he was doing.) Good times at the turkey farm.

Funny thing happened the other day, we got another dental school acceptance! Mark got a call from Creighton University, which was both surprising and exciting. Mark has always liked the idea of going to Creighton, because of their well respected dental program. Every year ten students from Utah are selected and spend their first year taking science/dental classes at the University of Utah. The next three years are spent in Omaha, Nebraska at the dental school. The whole ordeal will allow us to come out with a considerably less amount of debt. Great education at a great price, can't beat that. And of course Mark made another cake to celebrate. You can't see it, but it's a red velvet cake underneath that vanilla frosting. This has nothing to do with the U of U connection, and everything to do with red velvet cake; it's so good!

Accident Prone

Toddlers in general are known for their clumsiness and ability to get hurt easily. Chad seems to be jinxed when it comes to Holly's house. Every time we go there he ends up hurting himself, a little worse than the every day bumps and bruises. This nice cut on the cheek was from a few days ago. We hadn't been in Holly's house for over two minutes when he was going down the stairs, got to the last step (thinking he was at the bottom), turns and walks into thin air and fell to the side hitting the paneling right on his cheek. Not fun. As if that wasn't enough, when we got home to Provo he climbed onto a chair like he usually does. Next thing we know the whole chair fell over, Chad included, and he bumbed his chin pretty good as well as breaking a part of the chair. Poor guy had a rough day. Good thing these little guys heal to quickly.

The elusive letter of acceptance has finally arrived! Mark got an e-mail from Indiana University last week so we're going to dental school. What a relief to know that we've got somewhere to go next year. Mark shutters at the thought of having to study for the DAT and apply all over again. Fortunately, he shutter no more. Mark graduates from UVU in April and school will start at IU in July, so we'll be moving sometime in between. Mark heard recently from a professor that "you need to celebrate the victories in life," so we baked this cute little cake. Chad has also been heard chanting "Hoosiers" from his crib late at night. We're all celebrating.

Mary Turns 26 at the Happiest Place on Earth

These Bushman kids sure know how to party! Here we are at the Animal Kingdom. As we strolled along, we stopped to watch an African band perform. Pretty soon they started pulling people from the crowd to get out and dance with them. It being Mary's birthday, the rest of the family started pointing at her and much to her embarrassment, she got pulled out in front of everyone to join in the dancing. Each time she thought they were done and started to walk away, the African musicians would pull her back. The family got a kick out of it. It's always fun watching one of our own get sucked into making a fool out of ourselves in front of a large audience.

That night we all got together at Downtown Disney to eat dinner at the new T-Rex restaurant. It was filled with moving dinosaurs that set the ambiance quite well. Right before we left, we heard singing and clanking of some sort which was the workers coming with cake and ice cream, complete with a dry ice cup making the plate even more enticing. What a fun and exciting birthday!

For Christmas this year the Bushman's flew all of us kids (minus grand-kids) out to sunny Florida for an extreme Disney Vacation. We hit all the parks...Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Disney's Hollywood Studios. We had a blast!

Jump On It!

Last Friday we decided to try something new, so we took Chad and our niece, Kady to "Jump On It". It's got tons of trampolines all connected together so people can attempt to jump from one trampoline to another without killing themselves. Actually, once we took off our socks we were a lot more successful in our attempts. Chad loved it and kept his balance well when there was no one else on the trampoline with him to throw off his equalibrium. And as you can see, Kady was soaring high. What a fun place!

Chad's first trip to the Marriot Center was met with awe and wonder. He spent the first 30 minutes on Mary's lap just trying to figure things out. We enjoyed this, because we expected him to be all over the place. We'll, he eventually did settle in and tried to move "all over the place." The door prize was a fly swatter with the words "You got swatted!" on it. It was pretty cool to look over and see the whole student section waving fly swatters every time there was a blocked shot. Mary was just glad to finally have a fly swatter at home. Can't blame her; those flies have been around for quite some time. They're getting big. The Cougs put on a pretty good show and beat Long Beach State.

Monkey'in Around on Halloween

As you can see, our little man's animal instincts took over and his true nature came out. Yep, Chad was a monkey for Halloween. He loved being in his costume and never made a fuss or tried to take off his hood. Curious George would be proud. A few days before Halloween we had some friends over to carve pumpkins and Mary made "Ghosts in the Graveyard" pudding, which she'd been anxious to do for weeks. Mark and Mary doubled teamed the Skeleton Pirate, but Mark single-handedly took on the intricate details of the "C. Johnson" pumpkin. Oddly enough, it was the only pumpkin that was still sitting on our front porch the morning after Halloween, while all the others lie in ruins on sidewalk below.

On a beautiful fall afternoon, Mary decided to mix things up a bit and took Chad to the petting zoo at Thanksgiving Point. All of the animals were in pens or cages so apparently it wasn't a "petting" zoo, just a "look at me" zoo. Which is EXACTLY what Chad did. He would just STARE at the animals, completely expressionless; that is until he was free from his stroller and got to ride a pony. He loved it and even tried to ride with no hands. Mary had to hold him there the entire time.

Real Salt Lake 3 - FC Dallas 1

We got Rob tickets to see RSL in only the second game ever played in the newly constructed Rio Tinto Stadium. Definetly a beautiful venue to take in a sporting event, while the play on the field didn't disappoint either. RSL got down early, though we didn't know it until we finally got through the gates 15 minutes in. Yeah, we spent far too long waiting to get our tickets from the Will-Call window. Very frustrating. Once we got in and sat down though, it was all fun from there on out. Our seats were by the north goal and we got plenty of action. Maybe the best action came from a fan in our neighboring section. He stood up and started to holler, "WhenI say Re, you say Al. RE-Al, RE-Al!" Pretty funny, though you can't blame the guy for trying to get the fans into the game. It was definitely a fun one. I mean seriously, some games don't even have goals. We got to see three! We'd have posted more pictures, but Jen was charging 25 cents a shot.

Fall Break - Grandpa's Birthday

The beauty of Mark attending a state school is that he gets days off from school that, in all reality, he probably shouldn't get. No complaints here, just plans to make the most of the latest 4-day weekend. We spent Wednesday night and Thursday in Manti with Mark's parents and sister. Wednesday night, we went to the high school football game to cheer on the Templars. Mark took Chad down on the track upon which Mary questioned, "Are you allowed to be down here?" He replied simply, "Mark Johnson, Class of 2002." That's all he needed to say (though it was really just a funny line from a King of Queens episode.) Thursday was Chad's grandpas birthday, so we spent the day celebrating the only way we know how: Mark shingled the shed roof, Mary highlighted her hair, and Chad took a 3-hour nap. We apologize that pictures of the action have not yet been released. We do have pictures of one Elder Mike Johnson on his mission in Switzerland. Check 'em out. The birthday party was fun. Grandpa got a new gas grill and a comfy-cozy sweater (pictures also not available,...our bad.)

Jen & Meg Take State!

Mark's little sister Jen, and her doubles partner Meg brought the 2A State Championship back to Manti High School where it belongs. Most of the morning was spent waiting as the heavy rains forced things indoors and slowed down the flow. However, as soon as Jen and Meg hit the court, they waited for no one. Having lost a nail-biter in the Region Championship just one week ago, the duo set out to take care of some unfinished business. Mark was amazed at how good these two gals have gotten since the last time he saw them play. He found himself living vicariously, while at match point in the championship, their opponent's backhand sailed helplessly into the net. "We did it!" he was heard shouting, "We took state!" Well somebody did, and it wasn't him. Congratulations to Meg and Jen. As juniors, you bet they'll be back next year to defend their title. Photos compliments of Rob Johnson.

Mark's dental school tour continued with a brief stop in the Bluegrass state. Two thumbs up for enthusiasm and overall friendliness of the faculty and students at U. of L. The school is a little old, but has many positives as well, namely, the feeling of "being home." Not that Mark really was home (wearing his virtual reality headpiece,) but the city, the school, and the people felt like home. During the interview, Dr. Ralston said, "Yeah, we're just good ol' country folk." We also consider ourselves country folk, so there is an appreciation for that. Mark says it's a place that he'd be excited to move the family,...watch out.

"Now boarding flight 746, service to Richmond." Oh the soothing sound of Mrs. Airport Voice. Mark boarded five airplanes in two days in his quick trip across the country and back. Thankfully, a friend provided a place to stay making everything a whole lot cheaper. VCU is known for giving its dental students a great clinical experience. You can't go wrong with that. Mark thinks the city feels a little colonial, even though it doesn't really look that way. It just feels old. The interview went well, but it is really good to be home.

Saturday afternoon we took our seats at LaVell Edwards Stadium with high expectations of a thriller. The clash with the Bruins lived up to the hype for,...well,...about 8 minutes. BYU established dominance early and didn't let the foot off the gas. It was fun to see the Cougars score touchdowns like they were going out of style (In fact, Jen said that Entertainment Tonight officially placed touchdowns on their "Out-of-Style List" later that evening.) I believe her. Why would she lie? We all had a lot of fun even as the suspense wore off the sun's rays seemed to intensify. Hot, very hot.

Best dialogue from the father-son combo behind us:
Father: "They can't go for it on fourth down when they're up 59-0, because there is this unwritten law in football about not rubbing it in the opponent's face."
Son: "I don't care dad! I want 'em to score!"

We were there; he really didn't care.

Anybody remember that Jamie O'Neal hit from the '90s? Well, we set out to prove Ms. O'Neal wrong over labor day weekend as we took a little trip down south. We spent Friday night at Dave and Areli's house in Flagstaff and then continued on to Willcox the next morning. With the BYU kickoff still a few hours away, Mark and Jeff decided to golf scramble against Uncle Bruce and his son, Weston. We soon found out that Weston is a ringer as he gave the father-son duel a one shot victory with some "9th green" magic. No hard feelings here. We then spent the afternoon watching the Cougs in their unimpressive victory over UNI. Sunday we attended the Spanish Group that Jeff leads and then spent the afternoon relaxin'. On Monday we set sail for Phoenix to meet Dave, Areli, and Crystal at the Diamondbacks game. All of us Johnsons were really excited to see "The Big Unit" Randy Johnson on the mound. We weren't the only ones as the Cardinals came out and hit 4 homeruns off him in only 4 innings. The Diamondbacks battled back with 4 homeruns of the own and won 8-6. The ultimate highlight was provided by Stephen Drew who hit for the cycle (that means he hit a single, a double, a triple, and a homerun in the same game.) It was great to see Mom and Dad Bushman and we really enjoyed the weekend. Oh and by the way Jamie, there really is a grand canyon.

Midwestern University, Glendale AZ

"Glendale, in the Zona." That is Mark's first and last enjoyable memory of the movie "RV." On the other hand, he's pretty sure the reference was to "Scottsdale" and not "Glendale," so apparently it isn't a great memory after all. The last leg of the Johnson journey through Arizona was a stop in Glendale for Mark's first dental school interview. A little nervous, a little excited was the feeling going in, but things seemed to go pretty well. The school was very impressive and faculty really seemed to care (Mark claims he has an eye for insincerity.) Midwestern is a health science university that has been around for a while, but the dental school is brand new. Sounds exciting.

Toughest question: Other than family members or religious figures, who do you consider a hero?

Best quote: "Can we go get our nails done over there at "Quik Nails" instead of going to lunch?" - Dr. Polk, a 12-year-old in a 70-year-old body, on the bus ride to Subway for lunch. The old-tymers at Midwestern have to be among the funniest in the country.

Boyz II Men Goin' Off

Motown Philly was back again, if only for a night. Mark surprised Mary back in July with two tickets to see Boyz II Men at the Scera Outdoor Theater. Mark wasn't sure exactly what to expect; maybe some "too-old-to-dance brothers, bouncing around in some Fresh Prince of Bel-Air threads." Turns out, he couldn't have been more wrong as Shawn, Nathan, and Wanya hit the stage in smooth fashion. Mary was seen moving and shaking throughout the crowd. Mark felt like the Boyz were singing his favorite song to him personally, "Mama."

Mark thought it would be cool to set up one of those "beach/sunset/toes sticking up in the air" pictures, but with thighs instead of toes. Mary didn't think it was cool at all.

Chad's 1st and Foremost Birthday

Our little man finally broke through on the numerical age scale. As the party got underway, his response to being confined in his highchair was less than enthusiastic. Thankfully, everyone in the room simultaneously thought to start clapping and shouting "yay." Problem solved. On-lookers were impressed at how he could contain his excitement even while staring down the face of a chocolate tiger cake. Guests included his great-grandparents Bushman, Holly and the kids, Rob, Chris and Jen, and his also "great," but just "grandparents Johnson. He received lots of presents that he may someday appreciate; we can only hope.

Mary, Jen, and Grandma Johnson pulled out all the stops with this tasty creation.

Kady knew Chad wasn't an experienced enough "present opener" to handle an event of this magnitude. She gladly pitched in her special skills.

The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Johnsons

Mark and Mary spearheaded an effort to continue the one year tradition of an August Camping trip up Manti Canyon. Grandpa bought a new tent and he, Rob, and Jen wasted no time giving it its first test. Mark helped set it up and still can't believe it uses only three poles! How did it take so long to reach such heights in camping gear evolution? I can't answer that; I can only enjoy our present state. Beyond the tent, Chad enjoyed the tin-foil dinners and was very eager to get out and explore. He didn't get too far, because well, mom and dad kept picking him up. The sun eventually went down so we sat around the fire and roasted marshmallows and Starbursts (who knew). Rob showed up late, so naturally Chad stared at him until he finally fell asleep. Chris joined us in the morning for grandpa's mountain breakfast before a short stroll up to Milky Falls. The drive up to the falls was definitely more rough and rigorous that the actually hike, which says a lot about something. I think you know what that something is and what is being said about it...okay?

Nobody Derbys Like Sanpete Derbys

Daddy Johnson got Mark and Mary four tickets to Sanpete County Fair's latest version of the Demolition Derby. Mary claims to have experienced a derby at an earlier point in her life, but Mark is honestly convinced that nobody derbys like Sanpete county derbys (to derby = a real verb.) It didn't disappoint; she now agrees. The derby was high-lighted by half a dozen rollovers including one car causing a rollover, and then seconds later taking a hit and landing belly-up himself. Manti was in full representation with local boy Nick Shaw behind the wheel of his yellow #69. Nick won the finals heat convincingly, and then came back out to dominate the wipeout. His car is currently being tested for illegal substances, and rightfully so. It was like being on the playground watching the big kid with the big truck mercilessly ram the little trucks of the little kids. I think I've said enough.

The Gardens at Thanksgiving Point

Sounds like the name of a golf course or something. In fact, the golf course was right there next door and Mark longed to go and play, but even he enjoyed the stroll through The Gardens. Our friend Katie tipped us off to "$2 Tuesdays" which apparently is no secret; about 85% of Utah County mothers and their kids were there as well. For whatever reason, they opened up the entire "Gardens" rather than just the "Children's Garden," so we got the full experience. The boys even got to cool off their little toes over by Noah's Ark before Mom made them go home.

Mark Guarantees Victory,...Then Delivers.

Okay, so Mark didn't do anything spectacular, but his intramural softball boys did. How about capping off a 9-2 season with a Div II Men's Softball Championship. Mark did tell his friend Nate that they would come out of the championship game victorious,...guaranteed! He's not sure why he would run his mouth like that; he just thought it would be cool to guarantee something. Luckily his band of brothers backed him up. The Salad Shooters (don't ask) lost their second playoff game, forcing them into four consecutive elimination games. Surviving a few close ones, including a 2-0 (who scores zero runs in a softball game,..seriously) victory in the quarterfinals, the Shooters found themselves in the championship game. Their task was a tall order: beat the same team twice in one night. The planets were definitely in orbit, and the bats were smokin'. Surprising to all those in attendance at Game 1, the Shooters scored 13 runs through five innings calling into effect the mercy rule. Game 2 was a dogfight, as the opponents bats awoke and showed why they carved their way through the winners bracket. Unfortunately for them, the Shooters hit parade was still many floats and derby cars from being over. A back and forth thriller ended with a line-drive back to our pitcher, Travis, who instinctively doubled up the runner on 1st base. Game, Set, Championship. "Anything is possibuuuuullll," Mark screamed from the podium. Very emotion scene. Fun had by all. Special thanks to the "Players Wives Club" for all their support.

Mark Celebrates a Quarter Century

Mary spent the week planning and the weekend executing a gourmet double layer birthday cake for Mark. He calls it a "cake from the cover of a magazine," which it is, in essence (see chef Dorie Greenspan for more details.) Chad couldn't resist and took a swipe at it right before dad could cut it up for distribution. Mark wouldn't clean his hand immediately, because he wanted some pictures of the action. Of course Mark later forgot about the "iced" hand, which soon thereafter resulted in an "iced" foot. Chad was later seen sucking on his toes. We still wonder why? Rob and Chris hosted the party, Grandpa and Grandma brought the food, and Jen wore a psychedelic tie-dye t-shirt. Eventually Chad got tired of running around the room while shaking his head so we went home.

The artist currently known as "Ocho Cinco" has not yet reconsidered his demand to be shipped out of Cincy. His mother/agent is open for a move to the Cowboys based solely on potential pant/jersey coordination that is much more conducive to his current wardrobe. His father/advisor would rather Chad's agent purchase a new pair of pants instead.
